5 Signs You’re Over-Editing Landscape Photos

Image
One of the more difficult aspects of post-processing is identifying when you’re starting to over edit a photo. It’s common knowledge what many of the characteristics of an over-edited image are, but determining when you’ve gone too far, that’s the challenging part. In this 14-minute video, I break down five tips that have helped me to understand and identify when I’m beginning to over process an image. Sign #1. Unrealistic Shadows and Highlights A common issue with landscape photography is when you’re shooting into the sun and either you overexpose the sun, sky, or both. A quick tip before you make any adjustments is to change the profile from Adobe Standard to Adobe Neutral. Adobe Neutral is a flatter profile that’ll give you more latitude in recovering clipped highlights or shadows. In order to resolve the overexposed area, if you reduce the highlights to a point that you begin to see an unnatural ring around the sun, then you’ve gone too far. On the o...

Top Photography Tips for Making Your Pet Insta-famous

Image
If you have an Instagram account, chances are you probably follow an animal or two. Accounts like Pumpkin the Raccoon and Zammy the Pup have racked up thousands, and sometimes millions, of loyal followers. But just because you think every snap of your new French bulldog is frame-worthy, it doesn't mean everyone else is going to love it. Award-winning Kiwi photographer Craig Bullock, who runs pet photography business 'Furtography,' has shared a few industry secrets to help you capture those gram-worthy shots. 1. Remember to have some fun!  Playing with your loyal pet first will burn off some excess energy and build up trust - plus it will put you both in a good mood while you're at it. 3. Use higher shut...

How To Take Great Photographs Of Fireworks With Phone

It’s time to ring in the new year with the traditional display of explosives. Of course, part of that tradition now is trying to get the clearest, least blurry picture of the fireworks ready for Instagram, without resorting to carrying a camera around the whole night. So, here are the tips you need to get the best possible photo with the camera on your smartphone. General tips The first thing you need to do is make sure your camera lens is as clear as possible by wiping it with a clean microfibre cloth. All the oil from your skin and lint from your pocket is going to get in the way of the perfect shot, no matter how much the ol’ Vaseline lens trick might work great of Days Of Our Lives. The second thing is to find a way to hold your arms steady. While that sounds obvious at the start of the night, by the time you’ve had a couple of glasses of champagne things get a little less stable. Unless you have the steady hands of a surgeon, try to find a table or railing to brace your...

7 Expert Tips for Perfect Proposal Pictures

Image
A proposal is one of those major life events that are so full of happiness and hope for the future, you'll want to remember as many details as possible. Know what'll help? Pictures! "What's cool about proposal photos is that they're 'engagement photos' in the literal sense of the phrase," says Mary Marantz, one half of the award-winning photography duo Justin & Mary. "The actual joy and high are still happening." The surprise element is both a blessing and a curse: The upside is the potential for a lifelong keepsake capturing your lovestruck self in its most natural state. The downside is you run the risk of a bad hair day or outfit, an obstructed view from your photographer's hiding spot in the bushes, or you sussing out what's happening. Still, there's little that planning and preparation can't fix! To that end, we called in wedding photographers Aileen Choi, James and Jess Wittmayer of James and Jess Ph...
