Six of the best and worst beauty apps for editing social media selfies


Kim Kardashian is thought to use beauty apps to enhance her selfies - but are any actually worth using? Olivia Buxton puts six to the test....

As Kim Kardashian knows, you don’t have to be ready for your close up to get the perfect photo.
Selfie queen Kim is rumoured to use a beauty app called Perfect 365 to tweak her looks for Instagram .
And it is increasingly tempting to run your face through one of the many editing apps out there before presenting it to the world.
More than 3.48 billion people are on social media and while using filters to blur the edges is the norm, they will not get shot of wrinkles and spots.

So as a 46-year-old harassed mum of two, I tested six ­beautifying apps to see if I could dazzle like Kim.
And the results were both stunning and terrifying.

BeautyPlus

This app is free and 300 million people use it to smooth out selfies.
I had to take my photo from inside the app – you can’t import from your camera roll – but it did a very solid job of making me look 20 years younger.

With the tools, I was even able to thicken my eyebrows.
I’ve always wanted a daintier nose and I got one. Plus I plumped up my lips without needing fillers. Just a shame I looked like a cartoon.

FaceTune

Olivia was not convinced by the FaceTune app which cost £3.99 
This retouching app is reportedly used by Khloe Kardashian and is meant to serve up model looks.
I attempted the small job of smoothing my skin, whitening my teeth, getting rid of my grey hair and, oh, OK then, reshaping my entire face. But I was disappointed.
I thought all I needed to do was tap and touch to make quick fixes but my tired, working mum eyes remained.
This was the only one I tested that wasn’t free. And at £3.99, I don’t think it’s worth it. Delete, delete, delete.

Perfect365

The make-up addictions available on Perfect365 are quite bold 
This app, on iPhone, Android and Windows, boasts 20 editing tools to make you look like a star. I turned out more drag queen than beauty queen.
I used the contour tool to slim my face, lift my cheekbones and enlarge my eyes. I added some bright eyeshadow and eyeliner.
The result? My own daughters screamed.

PhotoWonder

PhotoWonder is one of the most popular apps on the list 
Widely considered the secret to a successful selfie, Photowonder is used by more than 100 million people.
I was sucked in by the More ­Beautiful tab that made my face slimmer and cleared up my ­blemishes. It can even give you a bigger chest.

For fast results, go straight to the One Click tool that smooths out your pores, thins your face and brightens your eyes automatically.
I was able to reduce my wrinkles and get sparkling teeth. But I was still more Barbie girl than girl next door.

CreamCam

Despite high expectations, Olivia did not like the effect of CreamCam 
This is supposed to be one of the best apps for giving you perfect skin in a flash but I thought it was a backward step from my original selfie.
The retouch tool drained the life out of me.
Plus the contour tool gave me a boxer’s nose, when I was aiming for Audrey Hepburn.

Facey

Facey rendered Olivia's face unrecognisable 
Like all the other apps, it sorts out your skin, eliminates wrinkles, and bags under your eyes vanish in a snap.
With a few taps I tweaked my face shape and thinned my jawline.
But heavy lashes narrowed my eyes and my jaw looked so pointy, I didn’t know who was looking back at me.
