7 Travel Swimwear Photography Tips According To A Pro

You and your partner decided to book a warm weather vacation and want to capture some great swimwear images for social media? It might not be as easy as 1-2-3 to get that magical shot. Not to fret, Anna Turayeva is a top Miami swimwear photographer who has been commissioned by leading swimwear brands and editorials. Here are 7 tips from a pro on capturing stunning swimwear images during your next vacation:
1.    Styling
For styling, choose contrast, bright solid colors, but if you want to play safe, get a black solid swimsuit. Accessories aren’t necessary but beach bag, straw hat, sunglasses could compliment your photos. Don’t forget a towel to dry your subject after the shoot!
2.    Time of day
Choose the right time to shoot. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best time for the beach shoot. Sunset’s Golden hour creates soft light that gives warmth to the model’s skin, beautiful glowy back-lighting. It’s also a great opportunity to get nice lens flares if putting your subjects stand with the sun behind them. If shooting with a wide aperture, you might to get some bokeh.

3.    Direct sunlight?
You aren’t supposed to shot in a direct sunlight in the middle of the day but if that’s your only option, there’s a couple things that you can do in order to avoid getting dark, long shadows and unwanted texture on your subject. Have your subject pose having her/his chin slightly up, pointing towards the sky, eyes closed. Try to shoot from above but avoid getting a shadow from your body. Camera settings: ISO 100, 1/200, f/9.
On a bright sunny day polarizing filter comes handy to darken the blues a little bit, to suppress glare from water, to increase contrast and saturation. It also helps to create shallow depth of field for out of focus background look.
4.    Use diffusers and/or reflectors
Place your subject in a shade or have an assistant to hold a diffuser above her/his head. My favorite diffuser is Lastolite SkyLite Rapid Standard Medium Kit 3.6’ x 6.6’, is light weight and softens harsh light and helps to bring interesting contrast to your pictures. Gold or silver reflector are perfect for a really bright days.
5.    Posing
Pose your subject correctly to get the most out of your shoot. If standing, ask your subject to go on tip toe in order to make the model to look as tall as possible, ask to bend elbows and touch fingers. Another great option is to ask her to cross her or to have her toes pointing when sitting. Sitting, standing crossing their feet, laying on a sand, stretch her legs.
Keep each image authentic and beachy as possible by adding sand all over her body, and have a wet hair look by putting the subject in water. Body oil or oily spray are great tools to give a natural glowy skin look. Don’t forget to use a sunblock and keep your subject hydrated. It might be hard for a model to keep her/his eyes open, therefore ask close her eyes and open on count three.
6.    Location
You can do great photos by a lake, wild nature, pool, balcony or simply on a street in a sunny day. Variety is the key. Try to find more than just sand and water – look for rocks, high grass, piers, safeguard booth (make sure to use it before the guard comes). Will give variety of shots and your subjects things to do.
7.    Gear
I use Canon 5D Mark IV accompanied with my most favorite lenses Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L II USM. I also love using Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM because of its extremely shallow depth of field in case if I desire to isolate my subject from background. Make sure to keep your gear sand free!
